Small circular pellets or roundels appear at the terminals and angles of the cross, a design element characteristic of Portuguese cruzados of this period. The surrounding circular legend in Latin carries the motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer), referencing the Christian crusading symbolism for which this denomination was named. The coin's irregular flan edges are typical of hammered production at the Lisbon mint during the reign of Manuel I. |
