Beschrijving keerzijde A large, bold Greek cross dominates the central field, its arms terminating with stepped or potent-style ends, dividing the field into four quarters. The date digits are placed in the quarters flanking the cross: the numeral '1' above the upper arm, '6' to the right, '4' to the lower left, and '7' to the lower right, composing the year of striking. A partial Latin legend runs along the periphery of the irregularly shaped hammered flan.

Aanvullende informatie

João IV's cruzado issues from Lisbon date to the immediate aftermath of the Restoration of 1640, when Portugal broke from sixty years of Iberian Union under the Spanish crown. The new regime needed coinage quickly — not merely for commerce, but as a declaration that Portuguese monetary authority had resumed. The cruzado, a denomination with deep Portuguese roots stretching back to Afonso V, was an obvious choice for that political work.

The Gomes 107.0x reference covers several die marriages within this short emission window, and specialists distinguish them by subtle variations in the cross and shield arrangement. Worth examining closely before cataloging as a single type.
