João IV's cruzado issues from Lisbon date to the immediate aftermath of the Restoration of 1640, when Portugal broke from sixty years of Iberian Union under the Spanish crown. The new regime needed coinage quickly — not merely for commerce, but as a declaration that Portuguese monetary authority had resumed. The cruzado, a denomination with deep Portuguese roots stretching back to Afonso V, was an obvious choice for that political work.
