Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield quartered with the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in cross) and the castles of the border — surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The shield is flanked by decorative elements and set within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend in Latin reads +IOAnIS:S€CUNDO:REGIS:P, identifying the issuing monarch João II of Portugal. The entire design is executed in the flat, bold relief characteristic of late medieval Iberian hammered gold coinage.
