Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal — the quartered shield bearing the five escutcheons charged with bezants and the bordure of castles — set centrally within a beaded inner circle. The mint letters R and P flank the shield to the left and right respectively, identifying the Porto mint. The crowned shield is rendered in the characteristic medieval Portuguese heraldic style. The surrounding field between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border carries the Latin royal legend in Gothic lettering.
