Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the five quinas (escutcheons) arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by the bordure of seven castles — all surmounted by a royal crown. To the right of the shield, the denomination numeral '400' is prominently struck in the field. The design is encircled by a beaded inner border, with the partially visible legend running along the outer rim.
