These pieces were struck during the regency period immediately following the removal of the mentally incapacitated Afonso VI, who was confined first to the Azores and then to Sintra by his own brother Pedro. The prince regent had not yet assumed the crown outright — that came only in 1683 when Afonso died — which is precisely why these coins bear a crown associated with the Prince rather than a fully regal title. The dating range straddles that constitutional ambiguity.
The Lisbon mint during this period was operating under significant pressure to remonetize following decades of wartime fiscal strain from the Restoration War against Spain, which had only concluded in 1668.
