Additional information

James III's copper issues are often overlooked against his more celebrated gold coinage, but the Crux Pellit series occupies an awkward political moment — his reign opened with a regency following his father's death at Sauchieburn, and the Edinburgh mint operated under conditions of contested authority for much of the 1460s. Type III of this issue reflects one of several sequential die modifications made during that period, likely administrative rather than aesthetic in motivation.
