The "Zonnekroon" — sun crown — takes its name from the radiating crown type popularized in the Burgundian Netherlands, and this Guelders issue sits in a politically charged moment: 1544 was the year Charles V finally extinguished Guelders' independence entirely, absorbing the duchy into the Habsburg Netherlands following decades of resistance under William of Cleves. The C ZVT mintmark combination is sufficiently rare that this specific die marriage goes unrecorded in both Gelder-Hengst and Van der Chijs, making positive attribution dependent on Delmonte and Friedberg cross-referencing alone.
