Obverse description Cowrie shell imitation of elongated, navicular form, carved to replicate the natural shell morphology. A single median longitudinal ridge divides the obverse face, flanked on both sides by a series of carved transverse grooves representing the dentate teeth of the aperture. The carving may perforate the piece entirely or retain a thin backing of material beneath the simulated teeth. The surface exhibits an aged, textured patina consistent with ancient bone.
