Pedro I came to power at fifteen and spent much of his reign fighting a dynastic civil war against his illegitimate half-brother Enrique de Trastámara, a conflict backed by Aragonese and French intervention. The cornado issues from Burgos belong to this turbulent window — Burgos was among the primary mints Pedro relied upon to fund his campaigns, and billon coinage was debased progressively as military expenses mounted through the 1360s. Pedro was ultimately defeated and killed at Montiel in 1369, and Enrique systematically recalled and overstruck much of his predecessor's coinage.
