Additional information

Juan II inherited the Castilian throne at age two in 1406, and real power remained with regents — first his mother Catherine of Lancaster, then his cousin Ferdinand — until he came of age. His personal reign was dominated almost entirely by Álvaro de Luna, his enormously influential favorite and constable, who effectively governed Castile for decades until Juan finally signed his execution order in 1453, a year before his own death. The cornado, a low-denomination billon piece tracing its type back to Sancho IV in the late thirteenth century, continued to serve petty transactions throughout this turbulent half-century of proxy rule.
