Carlos I of Spain held Navarre as a separate kingdom under distinct legal arrangements, and its coinage was struck accordingly — not integrated into the broader Castilian monetary system. The cornado was an archaic denomination by 1549, long obsolete elsewhere in the Iberian peninsula, but Navarre's fueros preserved local monetary traditions well past the point where such small billon pieces had any equivalent in neighboring kingdoms.
