Obverse description Left-facing bust of Marianne in high relief, wearing a decorated helmet with flowing hair, modelled after Mademoiselle Fernande Dubois, an Opéra-Comique artist. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE curves around the rim, and the engraver's signature GEORGES LEMAIRE appears in small lettering in the lower left field.

Reverse description A furled standard planted atop a pile of arms including rifles, sabres, and cannon, symbolising the defence of the nation. A cartouche in the lower central field bears the dedicatory inscription AUX DEFENSEURS DE LA PATRIE, flanked by the dates 1870 and 1871 in the upper field.
