| Opmerkingen |
Aldegalega — now known as Montijo — was among dozens of Portuguese municipalities that resorted to locally issued paper emergency money in 1891, when a severe financial crisis triggered by speculative excess and the collapse of credit dried up small-denomination coinage across the country. The Câmara Municipal's authority to issue such notes was legally tenuous at best, and the central government moved to suppress most of these emissions within months.
The connection to the Lisbon newspaper Diário de Notícias is the genuinely unusual element here. Several of these municipal notgeld issues were distributed or promoted through newspaper partnerships — a circulation mechanism with no real precedent in Portuguese monetary history.
