Pick 153 was issued under the Estado Novo regime at a moment when wartime neutrality had made Portugal an unlikely financial crossroads — Lisbon was flooded with refugees, spies, and hard currency, yet the domestic economy remained tightly controlled. The 20 Escudo denomination sat at a working-class level of daily exchange, and notes from this series circulated heavily enough that high-grade survivors are genuinely uncommon.
The "Diário de Notícias #59" designation identifies this as a collector reissue packaged with the Lisbon newspaper's numismatic series — the note itself is original, not a reproduction.
