Comments

Portugal's wartime finances were under severe strain by 1918, and the acute shortage of small change drove the Banco de Portugal to issue fractional cédulas in large numbers. This 50 Centavos note was part of that emergency programme — low denominations printed cheaply to substitute for coins that had been hoarded or melted down as metal values rose above face value.

The Diário de Notícias series designation reflects a collector-market classification convention, not an official Banco de Portugal series name. Pick 112 circulated heavily and survivors in clean condition are genuinely uncommon.
