备注

The 50,000 Réis denomination placed this note at the extreme upper end of Banco de Portugal's late nineteenth-century paper issues — a face value so large that it functioned almost exclusively in wholesale commerce and inter-bank settlement, never passing through ordinary hands. By 1895, Portugal was navigating the financial fallout from its 1892 partial debt default, the first sovereign default in modern Portuguese history, which had severely damaged confidence in state-linked financial instruments.

The "Diário de Notícias" collector series designation indicates this note was issued as part of a newspaper-sponsored numismatic collection decades after original circulation — the underlying note is historical, but its current context is a mass-market reprint or facsimile distribution. Provenance matters here.
