Banco do Minho was one of Portugal's provincially chartered banks, based in Braga, and authorized to issue notes under the decentralized banking regime that persisted in Portugal until the Banco de Portugal gradually consolidated the right of issue through the late nineteenth century. This 500 Réis note dates from 1887, when that consolidation pressure was already building — the bank's note-issuing privileges would not survive the decade intact.
Printed locally in Braga rather than sent abroad to the major security printers, which was unusual for the period and likely accounts for the relatively modest print quality reported across the series.
