Portugal's 1891 financial crisis — triggered by the suspension of gold convertibility in May of that year — forced a rapid expansion of small-denomination paper into circulation to substitute for hoarded coin. The 50 Réis note belongs to that emergency issue. Casa da Moeda printed it domestically, which was itself unusual; the country had previously relied on foreign contractors for higher-denomination notes.
This particular example is a collector reissue produced by Casa da Moeda for the Diário de Notícias newspaper series, not an original circulated specimen.
