Clement X (Emilio Altieri) reigned from 1670 to 1676, and the original piastra this replica reproduces was struck during a pontificate defined largely by the Pope's advanced age — he was elected at 79 and governed substantially through his cardinal-nephew, Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni. The IPZS issued this piece in 1991 as part of its ongoing series reproducing historic papal coinage, using .835 silver to approximate the fineness of the Baroque-era originals.
