Banca Commerciale Italiana commissioned a series of silver replicas in the late 1980s reproducing celebrated Renaissance coin designs, this piece drawing from Leonardo da Vinci's proposed testone for Ludovico il Moro — a project that was never minted in the 15th century. The original remained a design concept, likely prepared around 1494–1495, known today only through drawn studies.
BCI distributed these as institutional prestige pieces rather than circulating currency, and they were never legal tender.
