Banca Commerciale Italiana issued a series of silver replicas during the 1990s reproducing historic coinage associated with Italian and broader European monetary history. The Sovrano was a gold trade coin of the Habsburg-controlled Lombardo-Venetian territories, and Joseph II's issues from the Milan mint in the 1780s were among the more commercially significant of his reign in northern Italy.
