Reverse description Saint Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, is shown enthroned and facing frontally, vested in episcopal robes, holding a crozier in his left hand and raising his right hand in the gesture of benediction. The figure is rendered in the hieratic, stylised manner characteristic of 14th-century Italian medieval ecclesiastical iconography. The surrounding circular legend in Gothic uncial lettering identifies the saint and the city, running along the outer field. The overall composition closely replicates the reverse type of the original Milanese grosso struck under the Visconti lords.
