Wartime Algeria produced a remarkable volume of private and commercial scrip as the official supply of small-denomination coinage dried up after 1940. Maison du Colon — a colonial-era retail operation based in Oran — issued this Coca-Cola voucher as functional change substitute, redeemable against purchases rather than through any banking mechanism. The Coca-Cola branding is not incidental: the American franchise had established North African distribution before the war, and its presence on a 1942 Algerian merchant token reflects supply chains that were already badly disrupted by that point.
