Cistophori were the regional coinage of Asia Minor long before Rome absorbed the territory, and Augustus deliberately retained the format when reorganizing eastern provincial issues — a pragmatic concession to local commercial habit. By the Flavian period the series had become an instrument of dynastic messaging as much as monetary supply, struck at Ephesus for circulation across the Asian provinces rather than in Rome itself.
This piece dates to Domitian's period as heir under Titus, before his own accession in September 81. The PRINC IVVENTVT title — Prince of Youth — was conferred on designated imperial successors and carried with it priestly and military honorifics that underscored dynastic legitimacy in the eastern Greek-speaking world, where such titulature resonated strongly.
