Additional information

The Kyōhō Chōgin was issued following the 1714 recoinage ordered under the Tokugawa shogunate's Kyōhō monetary reforms, which reversed the deliberate debasement policies of the Genroku era. Earlier authorities had reduced silver fineness to expand currency supply; the Kyōhō recoinage pushed purity back toward older Keichō-era standards. The Ginza, operating under shogunal authority, hand-struck and assayed each piece individually — hence the stamps.

Examples bearing nine stamps or fewer reflect early handling before the full inspection cycle was complete, or pieces that escaped additional countermarking during recirculation audits.
