| Obverse description | Draped bust of Hormizd I facing right, wearing an elaborate crown surmounted by a decorated korymbos and adorned with a lion's head device. The effigy is rendered in the characteristic Sasanian artistic style with fine drapery folds visible at the shoulder. The Pahlavi legend AWHRMYZDY MLKA, translating as 'Hormizd, King,' is inscribed in the field surrounding the royal portrait. |

Hormizd I ruled for less than two years before his death in 273 AD, yet coinage struck under his name persisted well beyond his reign as the Kushano-Sasanian governors continued issuing types in his image across Bactria and the eastern provinces. This piece almost certainly postdates the king himself.
