Facing bust of Artabanus II rendered in a schematic, archaic style characteristic of Parthian bronze coinage. The king's face is depicted frontally with large, stylized eyes, a broad nose, and a prominent beard, set within a compact circular field. The portrait exhibits the crude but expressive workmanship typical of small-denomination hammered bronzes struck at the Ecbatana mint. No legend or inscription accompanies the effigy on this denomination. |

A stylized eagle or bird motif occupies the center of the reverse field, rendered in a summary, heavily worn style consistent with small Parthian bronze issues. The design is set within a plain circular border, with the striking surface showing the irregular flan typical of hammered coinage of this period. The reverse is largely devoid of inscriptional elements, in keeping with the Sellwood 63.28 variety attribution for this minor denomination of Artabanus II. |

Artabanus II spent much of his reign in open conflict with Rome and in repeated struggles against rival claimants backed by Parthian nobles — he was driven from power at least once before reasserting control. Small copper issues like this one circulated at the lowest denominational level, largely ignored by the political turmoil above them. Ecbatana, the old Median capital, served as one of his principal mints during the consolidation of his rule in the late teens and twenties AD.
The Sellwood 63.28 variety designation places this piece within a tightly classified subgroup distinguished by specific die characteristics documented by David Sellwood in his 1980 reference.
