Chalkon - Stratonikos

Beschrijving voorzijde	The obverse depicts the iconic sphinx of Chios seated to the right, rendered in compact relief characteristic of Hellenistic civic bronze coinage. The mythological creature is shown with folded wings and a raised forepaw, with a club or staff placed upright before it in the field. The design occupies the majority of the flan, with no surrounding legend, the sphinx serving as the principal civic symbol of the island of Chios.
