Additional information

Ptolemy IX came to power not through succession but through the scheming of his mother, Cleopatra III, who reportedly preferred her younger son and only elevated Ptolemy IX under pressure from the Alexandrian populace. The joint reign was fractious from the start — she expelled him in favor of his brother Ptolemy X around 107 BC, ending this issue's production window.

The Copenhagen specimens catalogued at 678–680 show minor die variation consistent with simultaneous use of multiple obverse dies, unsurprising given Alexandria's mint output demands during a politically unstable co-regency.
