Obverse description Sphinx seated right in three-quarter view, with folded wings rendered in fine detail and a human head facing right. A bunch of grapes is depicted in the field before the creature, serving as a characteristic emblem of Chios. The design is executed in a bold, somewhat archaic style typical of late Hellenistic bronze coinage from the Aegean islands. The flan is irregular, and the relief is moderately high with broad flat fields.
