Apameia was founded by Seleukos I and named for his Bactrian wife, but by the first century BC the city operated as a thoroughly autonomous civic authority under Roman provincial administration in Asia. This small bronze was issued during a period when Phrygian cities were reasserting local identity through coinage after the disruptions of the Mithridatic Wars, which had devastated Roman Asia between 88 and 63 BC. The magistrate names Kefisos and Skau appear on the type, a practice that helps modern scholars sequence the otherwise difficult chronology of Apameian civic bronzes.
