Kolophon's bronze coinage of this period reflects a city navigating the turbulent aftermath of Persian reassertion over the Ionian coast following the King's Peace of 387 BC. The magistrate name Hermothes appearing on this issue places it within a civic administrative structure that Kolophon maintained even under shifting overlordships — Persian, then briefly Macedonian as Alexander's campaign swept through Asia Minor after 334 BC.
Milne's classification of this type remains the standard reference, though Kinns refined the die sequence considerably.
