Chios maintained unusual autonomy within the Roman provincial system through much of this period, a status formally recognized after the island sided with Rome against Antiochus III at the Battle of Magnesia in 190 BC — which also marks the likely opening of this issue's production window. The terminal date of 84 BC corresponds to Sulla's reorganization of Asia following the First Mithridatic War, which disrupted or ended civic bronze coinage across much of the region.
