Chalkon

Abdera, the Thracian coastal colony founded by Teos refugees around 545 BC, was better known for its silver coinage — the city's griffin staters ranked among the finest struck in the northern Aegean. This small bronze issue belongs to the period when Abdera was navigating the competing pressures of Athenian alliance and Macedonian encroachment, eventually sacked by the Triballi around 376 BC and rebuilt under dramatically reduced circumstances.

The SNG Copenhagen grouping for this type draws from the National Museum's Danish collection, assembled largely in the 19th century from Thracian site finds.
