Additional information

Mende, situated on the western prong of the Chalcidice peninsula, was among the most prosperous wine-exporting cities of the northern Aegean — its vintages mentioned by Aristophanes. This small bronze likely circulated as fractional small change during the period when Mende was rebuilding civic life after its violent suppression by Athens in 423 BC following the city's defection to Brasidas of Sparta.
