Metropolis was a minor Thessalian polis whose civic coinage is poorly documented in ancient sources, leaving its precise constitutional status — whether fully independent or subject to Thessalian League authority during this period — still debated among specialists. The city's bronze issues are consequently scarce in collections, turning up almost exclusively as single finds from regional excavation contexts rather than hoards.
The BCD collection references here are significant: the late Jean-Pierre Righetti assembled the most systematic grouping of Thessalian bronzes ever offered at auction, and the double citation across both BCD Thessaly sales suggests this type was represented by distinct specimens, not a single coin recatalogued.
