Chalkon

Gyrton was a minor Thessalian city in the Peneios river valley, and its autonomous bronze coinage is rare enough that the BCD collection represented one of the few opportunities scholars had to study these pieces in any depth. The city's political independence was effectively ended by Macedonian consolidation under Philip II, making issues from this period the last expression of local civic authority before Gyrton became absorbed into the broader Macedonian administrative apparatus.
