Chalkon

Meliboia was a small coastal settlement on the eastern edge of Thessaly, tucked below Mount Ossa along the Magnesian shore. Its independent bronze coinage is exceptionally rare — the city disappears almost entirely from the literary and numismatic record after the Macedonian consolidation of Thessaly under Philip II, which is precisely the window this issue falls into. Whether this chalkon represents civic pride before absorption or was struck under some degree of Macedonian tolerance is unresolved. The Rogers reference drawing a blank underscores just how thinly documented this mint remains.
