The FEL TEMP REPARATIO coinage was launched in 348 AD to commemorate the eleven-hundredth anniversary of Rome's founding, though by Constantius II's reign the slogan — "restoration of happy times" — rang increasingly hollow against a backdrop of Persian pressure on the eastern frontier and continuous usurpation attempts in the west. The Thessalonica mint was one of several activated to meet the enormous demand this propagandistic emission required.
RIC VIII 172 falls within the issue produced after Magnentius's defeat at Mursa in 351, one of the bloodiest battles of the fourth century, which left Constantius the undisputed ruler of a significantly depopulated empire.
