Reverse description The Portuguese royal shield is displayed in the center of the field, depicted without castles in the corners, consistent with the simplified ceitil coinage of Sebastião I. The shield bears the characteristic arrangement of the five escutcheons (quinas) with the bezants. No circular border is present on the reverse, as this Group 2 type confines the circumference to the obverse only. The surrounding legend SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : P : A encircles the shield, though portions are typically weak or absent due to the irregular hammered flan and variable die alignment.
