Additional information

Sebastião I ascended to the Portuguese throne in 1557 at age three, with his grandmother Catherine of Austria serving as regent. These early copper ceitils, struck in his name almost immediately upon accession, predate any real royal authority he would exercise. The Group 2 classification in Magro's typology distinguishes pieces where the circumscribing line on the obverse is present only as partial traces — a result of shallow die cutting and the inherent difficulty of striking thin copper flans consistently at this diameter.
