The ceitil takes its name from Ceuta, the North African enclave captured by Portugal in 1415 — the coin was likely introduced specifically to facilitate trade and pay troops in that garrison city, where small-denomination copper was chronically short. Afonso V's aggressive North African campaigns through the 1460s kept Ceuta and its supply lines politically central, which explains the sustained output of this type across multiple die groups.
Group 9's castle variant with high wall and small flanking towers represents one of several die iterations struck during 1463–64, a period of intensive mint activity tied directly to Afonso's preparation for the siege of Anafé.
