Obverse lettering ALFONSVS V REX PORTUGALIE
Reverse description Central device consisting of the Portuguese royal shield, quartered with castles and escutcheons of bezants (quinas), enclosed within a plain or beaded inner circle. The shield is rendered in a flat, heraldic style typical of hammered copper issues of the period. A peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown as a statement of Christian royal authority. The coin exhibits an irregular, slightly convex flan with pronounced die wear and surface corrosion consistent with extended circulation and copper oxidation. The reverse design aligns with the standard iconographic programme of ceitis issued under Afonso V.
