Obverse description Central device features the crowned arms of Monaco — a lozenge-patterned shield of fusils (lozenges) in the Grimaldi heraldic tradition — surmounted by a princely crown. Flanking the shield are two palm or laurel branches, framing the coat of arms symmetrically. The peripheral legend reads ANT. I. D.G. PRIN. MONOE., identifying Antoine I (Antoine Grimaldi) as Prince of Monaco by the Grace of God. The lettering is distributed around the outer rim in Latin script. The overall style is characteristic of late 17th-century hammered billon coinage of the Monaco principality.
