| Reverse description | Central device is a large floriated cross with fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, occupying the majority of the coin's field, executed in a bold and stylized manner typical of the period. The circular legend surrounding the cross reads CRVX. HOSTIUM. VICTRIX. 1701., meaning 'The Cross, conqueror of enemies,' with the date 1701 incorporated into the legend. The lettering is in Latin script, distributed evenly around the periphery. The cross design is a recurring symbol of the Grimaldi dynasty's Catholic devotion and dynastic identity. The overall design is consistent with hammered billon small denomination coinage of the Monaco principality under Antoine I. |
