Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic arms of Érard de la Marck, Prince-Bishop of Liège, consisting of a crowned shield bearing the episcopal cross of Liège surmounted by a mitre, set within a crescent or curved decorative base typical of late Gothic ecclesiastical coinage. The shield is rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading ERARD . DE . MARKA . EPS . LEODI, identifying the issuer as Erard of la Marck, Bishop of Liège. The coin exhibits the irregular flan and uneven strike typical of early sixteenth-century hammered coinage from the Low Countries.
