Bronze with wolf and lizard

The Carnutes occupied the territory around modern Chartres and Orléans, and Caesar identified them explicitly in the Gallic Wars as the tribe whose territory hosted the annual pan-Gallic druidic assembly. This bronze was struck in the decade immediately following Caesar's final pacification of Gaul — a period when surviving Gaulish tribes retained enough local administrative continuity to mint their own coinage, even as Roman political control tightened around them. That window closed quickly.
