The Carnutes occupied the territory around modern Chartres and Orléans, and their tribal lands held particular significance in the Gallic world — Caesar identifies their region as the annual gathering point for the pan-Gallic druidic assembly. This coinage postdates the catastrophic revolt of Vercingetorix, in which the Carnutes played an initiating role: the massacre at Cenabum (Orléans) in 52 BC that triggered the wider uprising was carried out on Carnute soil. These late bronzes were struck by a people already under Roman administrative pressure, their autonomous minting window closing within a generation.
